OXFORD – U.S. Sen. Trent Lott may have been as surprised as many others Wednesday when his brother-in-law, famed trial lawyer Richard “Dickie” Scruggs was indicted with four others in an alleged scheme to bribe a judge, federal officials said Thursday.
At a 10 a.m. Oxford news conference, U.S. Attorney Jim Greenlee said Lott is “not involved,” as far as investigators know, in any legal problems Scruggs may be facing.
Greenlee and the FBI talked about the 14-page indictment and other information related to accusations against Scruggs, Zach Scruggs, Sidney Backstrom – attorneys in Scruggs’ Oxford law firm – Timothy Balducci of New Albany and former state auditor Steve Patterson, a Balducci employee.
