JACKSON - Former Mississippi Gov. Ray Mabus on Saturday married Lynne Horecky, a nurse he has dated the past three years.
It was a relationship that almost never happened.
Mabus said his physician knew Horecky, who works at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. The doctor suggested Mabus give her a call.
“I got her voice mail. When she heard, ‘Hi, this is Ray Mabus,’ she thought it was one of those recorded political messages,” Mabus told The Associated Press before the wedding.
Mabus turns 59 on Thursday. Horecky is 40.
He has two daughters from his previous marriage. Elisabeth is 17 and Annie is 15.
Horecky’s daughter, Kate, is 6.
Mabus, a Democrat, was governor from January 1988 to January 1992. He was the U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1994 to 1996.
He and his first wife, Julie, divorced in the late 1990s.
