TUPELO – Oliver the escaped monkey now has a bounty on his head.
A local businessman Thursday offered a reward for anyone in the country able to capture the white-face capuchin that escaped from a zoo here this week.
The reward includes a weekend stay at the Tupelo Hilton Garden Inn, a VIP tour of the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum, a VIP tour of the Tupelo Automobile Museum, and – of course – a case of bananas.
“I think we live in the best small town in America, and we ought to promote it every
chance we get,” said the donor, who wished to remain anonymous.
Oliver’s escape from the Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo on Tuesday sparked a citywide search for the sneaky primate and made international news headlines, appearing in newspapers and TV broadcasts as far away as South Africa and Taiwan.
It also appeared Wednesday on the David Letterman Show and even inspired the talk-show comedian’s Top 10 List that night.
Numerous people have spotted the monkey since it picked the lock to his pen and fled the zoo. One resident on Old Belden Road even tossed it slices of watermelon, which Oliver ate before running away once again.

Bless his heart !!!!
The monkey should move to Saltillo. He’d feel at home there. Our mayor is a monkey, too.
We’ve been following the news about the monkey and we do hope that the monkey makes it home without any harm. The Celebrity monkey deserves a better habitat than the old cage because of his fame with Fox News now!
Not sure what sparked the comment on Saltillo’s mayor; kind of unwarranted. Or, as a second grader once told me, “takes one to know one.” Can’t argue with that logic.
This is too funny and very intertaining when so far from home. I just hope the little fellow doesn’t get ran over by a vehicle and killed or maybe get into a powerline. Maybe the State DWFP could capture it or at least assist in trying to before some idiot thinks of something worse.
As for the comments about the Mayor of Saltillo, why take some situation like this to hurt someone like that, if you dislike someone settle it face to face instead of coward like in an article such as this, shame on you.
